Easter in Dundee

With the way Easter falls this year, Easter 2013 is the perfect time to take a holiday break or long weekend away to Dundee. With so much going on over this time in Dundee, there are loads of Easter treats for whole family.

Easter Outdoors

Glamis Castle is just 12 miles from Dundee and makes a great day trip; it opens this year on 29th March, just in time to see the gardens at their best, including a mile long avenue lined with daffodils. There's a lot to explore: on the Nature Trail you might see red squirrels, roe deer and heron, and there are walled gardens and kitchen gardens too. Oh, and the Castle itself is pretty spectacular too. http://www.glamis-castle.co.uk

Easter with the kids

For some family fun, try the Easter Wildlife Fun Day at Camperdown Wildlife Centre. Spring is a great time to see the animals - from lemurs to otters and highland cows - and there are family activities to try, too.

Sensation, Dundee's Science Centre, is another great place to visit with the kids. It's a fun, hands-on way to learn about science, and adults seem to enjoy it just as much as the kids.

For a more action-packed day, skater kids will enjoy the excellent community-run Factory Skatepark, while 5-11 year olds can go next door to the custom-built soft play extravaganza of Fun Factory.

Easter at Apex City Quay Hotel and Spa

If all of this sounds like too much effort and you just want to relax, we understand. At the hotel's own Yu Spa you'll be able to soak in the hot tubs, enjoy the steam room and sauna, or take a dip in the pool - all included in your hotel stay. Edinburgh International Science Festival (23 March - 7 April 2013)

It's a little known fact that Edinburgh pretty much invented the concept of a Science Festival, so it's not surprising that it plays host to one of the biggest in Europe. Over 70,000 visitors are expected over two weeks, whether they're here to see big bangs or big names from science and TV.

The Edinburgh International Science Festival creates and presents hundreds of events for adults, children and families across the city over two weeks around the Easter break. Celebrating 25 years of introducing audiences of all ages to innovative and entertaining science, this year the Festival looks to the future offering talks, workshops, experiments, activities and events on such diverse themes as our food, our play, our cities and our medicine.

EISF Director Simon Gage and Richard Wiseman

This year's programme isn't released until 31 January, so details remain top secret. (Update: it's here!) The 2012 festival featured more than 200 events, including food foraging with an expert from River Cottage, robot dance routines, the physics of DJing and a mass experiment that created the largest database of dreams ever. There were even mobile science workshops roving round Edinburgh on special bicycles.

One 2013 event has already been announced: the Edinburgh Mini Maker Faire on 7 April 2013. Described as "the hottest show (and tell) in town", this event will bring creative and ingenious DIY tinkerers together to show off their work using exhibits and workshops in a family-friendly, creative environment. Examples of the sort of homemade projects you might see range from robotics, 3D printing, and wearable technology through to traditional crafts like blacksmithing and crochet. You could walk away from the faire having learned a new skill like soldering.

It's a great time to bring your children to Edinburgh. Many of the daytime shows are aimed at different age groups of children. In the evening, the focus switches to events for grown-ups right through to LateLab's sociable, interactive nights for adults.
