A Wild Life: An Audience with Steve Backshall (2 July 2012) - Wildlife expert Steve Blackhall was last on our screens in his BBC series Lost Land of the Volcano. Alfie Boe (11 July 2012) - Compared to other tenors in opera, Alfie Boe's rise to fame was as unconventional as some of the projects he's taken on since. He had years of conventional opera training and early dabblings with traditional opera, including a production in 1999 with Scottish Opera, before starring in Baz Luhrmann's Broadway production of La bohème. Since then he's had hit albums, sung in West End smash hit Les Misérables 25th Anniversary concerts, collaborated with Robert Plant and become a YouTube sensation by singing in Matt Lucas' kitchen. See the hugely popular singer in what will probably be a sold-out tour - Caird Hall, City Square, Dundee, DD1 3BB -

Factory Skatepark Annual Fun Day (21 July 2012) - The Factory has a long history in Dundee, from its initial home in an abandoned factory warehouse (now Dundee Contemporary Arts) to its current fantastic purpose built building. Charity-managed, it's a vibrant part of the local community and every year it hosts a fun day for all ages with bounces castles, climbing wall, face painting and maybe even some skating - Factory Skatepark, 15 Balunie Drive, Dundee, DD4 8PS -

Scotland's Countryside Festival (28 - 29 July 2012) - There aren't many festivals to which you can take your dog and your ferret, but then this does call itself "Scotland's Friendliest Festival". This is real family entertainment with an emphasis on country pursuits. The events are unusual, even bizarre, but they're all the more charming for it. Watch The Drakes of Hazard's Indian Runner Ducks navigate an assault course. See dare-devil horseriding display team The Devil's Horsemen - legendary Hollywood stunt riders and horsemasters with credits including Game of Thrones and Merlin. View some of the 1300 vintage cars that will visit over the weekend. Or learn how to throw an axe. There will also be markets hosting a huge range of food, drink and craft producers, so you needn't leave empty handed - Glamis Castle, Angus, DD8 1RJ -

Dundee Running Adventure Marathon and Half Marathon (29 July 2012) - Following Dundee's Green Circular Route over mixed and hilly terrain, this is not the race for you if you want to beat your fastest time. It's the big race in Dundee's running calendar, though, and it's very popular. If you want a challenge then you'll certainly find one to suit, whether it's in the marathon, the half marathon or the 3-person relay - Camperdown Park, Coupar Angus Road, Dundee, DD2 4TF -

Come and judge for yourself in the most spectacular venue in Scotland - Edinburgh Castle, Castlehill, Edinburgh, EH1 2NG -

Olly Murs (20 July 2012) - The dust will barely have settled after High Flying Birds' gig when X-Factor runner up and chart success Olly Murs rolls into town. A third album is in the pipeline, with writing due to start in April, so an early preview of new material is a possibility -

Madonna - World Tour 2012 (21 July 2012) - Believe it or not, in a career spanning 23 years as an entertainer, this will be Madonna's first concert in Scotland. Hitchhikers's Guide to the Galaxy Radio Show... Live! (21 July 2012) - Douglas Adams' much loved and wholly remarkable books actually started life as a successful radio series. Now those programmes have been adapted for the stage, with the original voice actors in their roles. It's been applauded by critics and fans alike and since this is the last date on the tour it's not to be missed. Breaking news also reveals that for the Edinburgh show, bestselling author Neil Gaiman will be the voice of the book - Edinburgh Playhouse, 18 – 22 Greenside Place, Edinburgh, EH1 3AA -
