November to January is traditionally panto season in the UK, when towns and cities all over the country put on their festive shows and the rafters ring to the calls of 'He's behind you!' Usually adapted from children’s stories, these popular theatre productions follow a well-known format, bringing together a mix of comic characters, audience participation and twists on classic tales.

In Edinburgh, the two main productions for 2012 are Mother Goose at the King’s Theatre and Cinderella at the Lyceum Theatre. There are also local performances of Puss in Boots at the Brunton Theatre and Frankenstein at St. Serf's Church Hall.
