  • About us

Apex Hotels is one of the UK's leading operators of contemporary city centre hotels. The company currently operates three hotels in London, four in Edinburgh and one in Dundee.

Customer service is the primary focus for all members of the Apex Hotels team. The company has a reputation for providing a 'friendly face' to all guests and aims to provide positive opportunities for interaction with staff at every property.

Based in Edinburgh, Apex Hotels is a small family owned Scottish company, operating with a mission to provide chic and stylish destination properties in key markets across the UK. Management has adopted a philosophy of controlled, dynamic growth, with various key cities currently under review for potential expansion.

Apex Hotels is wholly owned by Norman and Dorothy Springford and their family, with each member of the family contributing their experience and skills to the company.

Apex Hotels was established with the opening of the Apex International Hotel in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket. A ten month conversion of the former Heriot-Watt University Mountbatten Building saw the hotel open with 120 bedrooms.

Due to the success of the initial hotel, Apex Hotels secured a site in the Haymarket area of Edinburgh and converted a derelict office building into the Apex Haymarket Hotel, a 66 bedroom property.

Originally launched as a budget three-star hotel, the Apex International went through a complete refurbishment and transformed into a four-star property. An additional 51 rooms were also added at this time.

A second former office building was acquired in the Grassmarket area and opened as the four-star Apex City Hotel. The design, content and service culture of the Apex City of Edinburgh has now been drawn from and implemented across the entire brand.

The company’s first new-build property and its first hotel outside Edinburgh is the four-star Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa in Dundee. Opened in March 2003, the hotel provides 152 rooms, conference and event facilities for up to 450, a bar, brasserie, restaurant and a Spa with a pool, hot tubs, sauna, steam room and Technogym™ studio. The Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa is a pivotal development within the regeneration of the city’s waterfront area.

Apex Hotels expanded its portfolio further with the opening of the Apex City of London Hotel, located between Tower Bridge and the Bank of England. The first property outside Scotland, the former office building was transformed into a focal point of the area, 130 bedrooms of four star luxury.

An additional 49 bedrooms were added to the Apex City of London Hotel.

The company’s fourth Edinburgh hotel, the Apex Waterloo Place, situated at the east end of Princes Street. Built in 1819, this landmark historic building was the first large scale hotel in Edinburgh and following significant investment, Apex Hotels returned the property to trading in March 2009 featuring 186 luxury bedrooms.

Apex Hotels opens a third hotel in London. The property, purchased in 2008 from the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, is the first hotel to be built in one of London’s Inns of Court. Apex Temple Court Hotel, situated just off Fleet St, represents a £50m investment to create a flagship 4 star deluxe contemporary hotel with 184 bedrooms.

Apex Hotels opens its own laundry facilities, based just outside Edinburgh, the laundry is now servicing all of the Scottish properties.

The Apex City Hotel has a renovation, increasing bedrooms to 122, introducing new City Plus rooms which have AirCon, added AirCon in suites and changes its name to the Apex City of Edinburgh Hotel. Agua Restaurant and Bar is also fully refurbished.

Apex Hotels checks in to Glasgow with the purchase of the former Marks Hotel on Bath Street. With plans for 104 bedrooms, a restaurant and a bar, Apex City of Glasgow will be due to open in autumn 2015.

Norman Springford steps down as Chairman with son Ian Springford stepping into this position.
