Environmentally Friendly Spa Design The Green Spa Yu Spa, at the Apex City Quay Hotel and Spa Apex Hotels understands the impact we make on the environment. We do as much as we can in our Hotels to minimise negative environmental impacts and our Japanese inspired Yu Spa is no exception. Below is a list of the things we have in place in Yu Spa at the Apex City Quay Hotel and Spa in Dundee where it has been classed as the first Green Spa in Scotland. The spa uses Elemis products that are 100% natural and not tested on animals. The Ozone Pool uses ‘ozone’ to keep it clean with minimal chlorine rather than a typical chlorine pool giving improvement to the environment and the health of the users. The pool and hot tubs are backwashed regularly to keep the filtration in good order to avoid the need for coagulant chemicals to do this. The hot tubs use ultraviolet light to clean themselves so use less chemicals. The hot tubs have covers fitted at night to reduce heat loss and water evaporation so less gas used to maintain temperature and water is used to maintain depth. Pool lights are changing over to energy efficient LED lights projecting to save £57,000 a year, a significant reduction in energy consumption and so a reduction in carbon emissions from the spa. Changing room showers have flow regulators as part of the mixer. This reduces not only water consumption but also reduces gas consumption from heating the water. Changing room toiletries are produced locally using natural ingredients. The spa bulk buys eco friendly chemicals for cleaning. They use chemical dosage dispensers for cleaning. Staff are COSHH trained. All gym equipment and tv’s are turned off at night. The air handling unit that provides ventilation throughout the spa is turned off at night They provide Yu Spa water bottles to all members to encourage them to refill rather than buying plastic drinks bottles or disposing of the cups provided. The laundry company uses eco-friendly cleaning products. Products used for treatments are bulk bought where possible and use dispensers. This reduces packaging and complies with the policy to reduce waste. Staff are trained on product measurements for treatments. The Yu Spa website has been designed with a black background throughout which is energy saving for the viewer as claims have suggested it uses less energy to light up the screen than if it’s a white background. Gas consumption in the spa is monitored separately from the Hotel to monitor gas used per user. This enables the spa to identify potential energy savings. Gas consumption has dropped by 9.3% over the past year. Electricity consumption in the spa is monitored separately from the Hotel. Sub metering has recently been installed and it is planned for our new developments. The spa recycles paper and packaging from products and as part of the purchasing policy packaging is reduced prior to being delivered. Investigating rain water harvesting to use this water in the spa. The spa conducts regular internal environmental audits. The spa has been audited through environmental bodies such as Envirowise, The Carbon Trust and Big Splash. Dual flush toilets and ‘save-a-flush’ bags are in place. Aerators are fitted to taps.
