Jutta Koether exhibition (9 February - 21 April 2013)
DCA's opening exhibition of 2013 is an intriguing prospect: an exhibition of work by performance artist, painter, poet, musician, critic and theroetician Jutta Koether.
Born in Cologne but subsequently based in New York and Berlin, Koether has been influenced along the way by elements of underground culture. Street art, cartoon art and punk have all manifested in her work. Occasionally this spills over into collaborative work: Koether has worked with seminal New York post-punk band Television and Kim Gordon of art-rock legends Sonic Youth.
Koether's paintings are vibrant and textured, often featuring media suggestive of alternative culture. However, some works in the exhibition draw inspiration from a very different source, Nicolas Poussin's prized Seven Sacraments series of paintings.
It's the sign of another great year of art in Dundee, with more to come at DCA and the inaugural Print Festival Scotland in the autumn. Given Koether's recent exhibitions, including the Whitney and Sao Paulo Biennials, this is a strong start.
There's more to experience here, so make the most of it with a weekend away in Dundee with dinner, bed and breakfast packages from £119 per room per night.
