What's on in Edinburgh in May 2013?

Event of the month

Extinct wasp in Burmese Amber - National Museums Scotland

Amazing Amber (10 May 2013 – 8 September 2013)

These amazing exhibits, ranging from charms and amulets to preserved animals, show that there's more to amber than Jurassic Park. - Find out more in our Amazing Amber blog post.

The House of Annie Lennox (23 March - 30 June 2013) - This retrospective exhibition, curated in partnership with the V&A, pulls together artwork from throughout the career of Scottish singer, songwriter and political activist Annie Lennox. From her years in Eurythmics to her solo career, it includes work from leading photographers, music video directors as well as some stunning costumes. - Scottish National Portrait Gallery, 1 Queen Street, Edinburgh, EH2 1JD - www.nationalgalleries.org

Derren Brown: Infamous (6 - 11 May 2013) - Before "mentalist" became slang for "crazy person", it used to describe people like Derren Brown: performers who use a mix of misdirection, manipulation and mental trickery to achieve apparently superhuman mental feats. Brown breaks from the history of this artform by actively debunking any suprnatural explanations, often explaining his methods, which actually makes the tricks seem even more astonishing. His stage shows are usually a sellout, so you'll have to be quick to get tickets. - Edinburgh Playhouse, 18 – 22 Greenside Place, Edinburgh, EH1 3AA - www.atgtickets.com/shows/derren-brown/edinburgh-playhouse

Ghost (14 May - 1 Jun 2013) - Set your potter's wheel spinning with this musical adaptation of the ever-popular supernatural romance. The phenomenal magical stage effects and a score by Dave Stewart of Eurythmics and Glen Ballard (who previously co-wrote songs with Michael Jackson and Alanis Morisette) really sets this apart from other musicals. - Edinburgh Playhouse, 18 – 22 Greenside Place, Edinburgh, EH1 3AA - http://www.atgtickets.com/shows/ghost-the-musical/edinburgh-playhouse

Summer(beer)hall (24 - 25 May 2013) - This is a beer festival with a difference. Summerhall is a huge new arts hub with a fantastically diverse programme with two secret weapons for a beer festival: an onsite brewery (Barney's Beer, the only microbrewery in Edinburgh) and Edinburgh's biggest beer garden. So as well as guest beers, live music, bratqurst and pretzels, you can take a tour of the brewery while you're there. Edinburgh is seeing something of a craft beer renaissance, so this event's timing couldn't be better. - Summerhall, 1 Summerhall, Edinburgh, EH9 1PL - www.summerhall.co.uk/2013/summerbeerhall

Edinburgh Marathon Festival (25 - 26 May 2013) - The marathon is always the biggest event in Edinburgh's running calendar, with more than 16,000 runners converging on the capital, from world class elite athletes to charity fun runners. With an overall evelvation drop of 40m over the 26.2 miles, it's a fast course, but there are half marathon, 10km and 5km options if that sounds like too much (and junior races so nobody's left out).- location, street, city, postcode - www.edinburgh-marathon.co.uk

Tubular Bells for Two (29 May 2013) - Anyone who has heard Mike Oldfield's landmark album will know what a staggering achievement this is: two musicians will play the full album live on stage. Expect a thrilling and theatrical spetacle as the race between instruments to build up the complex layered pieces from the album. - King's Theatre, 2 Leven St, Edinburgh, EH3 9LQ - www.edtheatres.com/tubularbells

Edinburgh Kiltwalk (29 May 2013) - In what promises to be a stirring, emotional event in aid of a range of children's charities, thousands of kilted walkers will parade through the streets of Edinburgh for 26 miles, 13 miles or 10km. Walkers will start the longer walks within the famous Murrayfield Stadium, where they'll be led out by Scottish rugby legend Chris Paterson along with massed pipes and drums. They should be quite a sight as the walk through the city before finishing at Murrayfield. - Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh, EH12 5PJ - www.thekiltwalk.co.uk

RSNO Season Finale! Oundjian and Benedetti Gala (31 May 2013) - Nicolae Benedetti may be the most familiar name on the bill, but with the massed RSNO choruses and a special guest narrator also present, this will clearly be a special night. With music from Laurence Olivier's Henry V by William Walton as well as pieces by Ravel, Saint-Saëns and Vaghan Williams, this should be a spactacvular finale. - location, street, city, postcode - Usher Hall, Lothian Road, Edinburgh, EH1 2EA - www.usherhall.co.uk

This is a great post Apex. Thanks
