  • Edinburgh, Scotland, combines the traditional with the modern and has lots of things to do for everyone. Shop at malls and department stores on Princes Street while Edinburgh Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, dominates Edinburgh's skyline.

Walk to the castle itself and see the Scottish Crown Jewels, or stay in Edinburgh's New Town and admire work by famous artists at the National Gallery of Modern Art.

Up near the castle lies the city's Royal Mile. As well as a starting point for ghost walks and guided tours (be sure to catch the Mary King's Close underground city tour), it has lots of souvenir shops that sell traditional Scottish tartan and whiskies. You can even have your photo taken with bagpipers.

Other main attractions in Edinburgh include:

    • Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parliament - the Queen's official residence in Edinburgh, and the home of the Scottish Parliament
    • Edinburgh Dungeon - learn about Edinburgh's dark past
    • Camera Obscura - view Edinburgh from a different perspective
    • Our Dynamic Earth - explore the Earth's past, present and future
    • Scottish Whisky Experience - learn what makes a good dram of whisky
    • Edinburgh Zoo - see this popular zoo home to more than 1,000 animals.

There are plenty more things to do in Edinburgh, of course. The city offers lots of different tours, including history tours and literary tours, so you can follow your interests and explore Edinburgh at the same time. If you want to see the city quickly and easily the city runs bus tours.

Trek up Arthurs Seat and enjoy Edinburgh views. If you want something even more active, cycling, climbing and other sports are all possible. If you prefer being a spectator, the city has two football grounds and a rugby stadium, as well as three cinemas and a theatre house.

These are just a few things to do in Edinburgh. See the different sections of our city guide for more information on Edinburgh, how you can save money in Edinburgh, and how you can book accommodation in Edinburgh with Apex Hotels.
