A Very British Tradition

The British have been drinking tea since the 1600s, and afternoon tea became popular during the 19th century. It is said that Anna Maria Stanhope, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, complained of a sinking feeling in the afternoons, and she decided to take tea and a light snack to remedy the problem. She started to invite her friends to the teas, and they were so impressed that they began to hold their own. It soon became a very fashionable way to spend the afternoon!

Afternoon Tea at Elliot's

Elliot’s Bar and Restaurant can be found at the Apex Waterloo Place Hotel, a building steeped in history. In fact, Charles Grey 2nd Earl, the man responsible for the production of Earl Grey Tea, was given the Freedom of the City of Edinburgh at a ceremony that took place at the Waterloo Hotel in 1834.

Elliot’s combines the traditional listed features of the historic building with contemporary design. With an ornate corniced ceiling, original fireplaces and expansive Georgian windows, Elliot's is the perfect setting for a traditional afternoon tea with a modern twist.

Afternoon Tea Menu - Available 2.30pm-5.30pm

Selection of Classic Sandwiches or Sandwich Pots:

  • Roast beef, horseradish cream and crispy baby shallots
  • Smoked salmon, lemon cream cheese and cucumber
  • Poached crayfish ‘cocktail’, avocado purée, mango
  • Baby mozzarella, four tomato and basil jelly (v)

Selection of tea pastries:

  • Mini lemon muffin
  • Macaroons
  • Cupcakes
  • Homemade fruit scones served with Heather Hill strawberry preserve and clotted cream
  • Chocolate fondues with strawberries, pineapple and marshmallows
