Bath’s newest hotel is starting to take on a flavour of its own
Award-winner Ben Abercrombie, aged 26, will join the team at the Apex City of Bath Hotel at the end of April and is confident that his creative approach will win over the city’s discerning clientele.
“Hotel kitchens are highly pressured environments but they are also filled with passionate people who have the drive to create wonderful experiences for diners. That will be the team’s ambition for the restaurant at the City of Bath Hotel.”

Another year of strong financial performance for Apex Hotels
Apex Hotels Limited has reported a highly successful financial year with an 11.8 per cent rise in underlying profits before tax, up from £9.2m to £10.3m.
The company said strong trading across its nine-hotel portfolio – which spans London, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee – and new room openings were key contributors.
Apex appoints General Manager for new Bath hotel
Apex Hotels has announced the appointment of Tim O’Sullivan as the general manager of its new 177- bedroom City of Bath Hotel.
Irish-born Tim brings with him more than 20 years’ experience in the hotel industry and will lead the Summer-2017 opening of the four-star premises on the corner of James Street West.
Edinburgh Links Could Benefit Bath
Bath could benefit enormously from greater links with cities like Edinburgh, claims the managing director of the latest addition to the city’s hotel scene.
Yousif Al-Wagga, the managing director of Apex Hotels, said one of the reasons why the Edinburgh-based hotel chain had chosen Bath as the location for its first hotel outside Scotland and London was the synergy between the two UNESCO World Heritage cities.
Apex Hotels go up a gear with new complimentary shuttle service
Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa in Dundee are going the extra mile by launching the city’s first complimentary shuttle bus service for hotel guests.
The service will run on a trial basis for three months. The new offering aims to extend the Apex Hotels ‘warmer welcome’ by providing guests with complimentary transfers to and from Dundee Airport and Dundee Train Station. Many of the hotel’s corporate guests will also benefit from a complimentary drop-off service to their place of work during the trial period.
Tourism skills blueprint targets sector growth
Skills Investment Plan focuses on leadership, digital skills and visitor experience. An action plan to help tourism employers develop the skills they need for further growth has been launched by the industry.
It aims to build on progress achieved since the publication of the original Skills Investment Plan in 2013, with the second edition again facilitated by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) in partnership with industry.
The new plan was welcomed by Robert Allan, HR Director at Apex Hotels and Chair of the Tourism Skills Group.
Yu Spa Scoop Scottish Spa of the Year
Yu Spa at Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa in Dundee are crowned Scottish Spa of the Year at the Professional Beauty Regional Awards. Angela McGarva, Yu Spa Manager, collected the award at a black tie ceremony at The Monastery in Manchester on Sunday 18 September. They beat finalists The Spa at Cameron House and Spa Uniq in Perthshire to claim the coveted title.
Edinburgh Apex Hotel Puts Extra Sparkle into Festival Finale
Staff at the Apex Grassmarket Hotel in Edinburgh are going the extra mile for the Festival Fireworks (Monday 29 August), inviting local children living with cancer to enjoy the display from their exclusive fifth floor viewing gallery, Heights. The children and their families work closely with Edinburgh based charity CCLASP, who provide non-stop help and support to children and teenagers suffering from cancer or leukemia. Guests will arrive at 8.30pm for hot drinks and cakes, ready to enjoy the fireworks display at 9.30pm.

Apex Hotels is celebrating 20 years of a Warmer Welcome and excellent guest satisfaction at each of its nine UK hotels in 2016. As a recognition of this outstanding guest service in each hotel in the Apex Hotels group has received a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Award. These awards are carefully selected and given to properties that consistently achieve outstanding traveller reviews on TripAdvisor over the past year.
Apex Hotels is proud to announce these awards having achieved an overall TripAdvisor rating of at least four out of five across each property this year including the Apex City of Glasgow Hotel recently launched in September 2015.
Still smiling after 20 years
On 29th April 1996, Norman Springford opened his first Apex Hotel in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket. The 127 rooms, each selling at a fixed rate of £39.95, were adorned with pictures on the wall bought from IKEA in Newcastle and transported back to Edinburgh in Norman’s wife’s Volkswagen polo.
Norman set out by hiring a core team of experienced people, many of whom are still part of the Apex team today, 20 years on and began seeking staff with the right attitude rather than the right experience. As he points out in the company manifesto, “If a team member has a smile, we can train them to accomplish anything.”
Apex Hotels unveils plans for £35M hotel development in Bath
The site, benefits from detailed planning consent for redevelopment into a new 177 bedroom full service hotel with extensive conference facilities.
“This is a rare and exciting growth opportunity for Apex to add to our portfolio and have presence in a popular UNESCO World Heritage Site” said Norman Springford, Chairman of Apex Hotels.
The site is situated on the corner of Charles Street and James Street West within Bath City Centre and is ideally located within easy reach of tourist destinations with the world famous Roman Baths situated just 200 metres away.
Tony Singh at Apex Grassmarket - back by popular demand and here to stay

Top students appointed to new Apex Hotels Apprenticeship Programme
Two students from Queen Margaret University (QMU), Edinburgh, have become the first in the capital to be selected for the new Apex Hotels and QMU Scholarship Programme.
Apex Hotels and QMU have teamed up to launch the scheme, which will help bolster career opportunities for hospitality and events students each academic year. The move aims to create a new generation of hospitality leaders who can transform Scotland’s hospitality industry so that it is a key player on the world stage.
Apex Hotels celebrate National Rubber Duck Day in a giant way
Passers-by at the Grassmarket, Edinburgh will be forgiven for thinking they have gone a little quackers on Wednesday 13 January, as a giant duck descended on the Grassmarket to celebrate National Rubber Duck Day.
The giant mascot is a larger than life (16ft tall to be precise) version of the cute Apex Duck that is part of the warmer welcome awaiting guests. Whichever Apex Hotel, there will be a little rubber friend awaiting them in the bathroom and is theirs to take home. The Apex Ducks have become an iconic symbol for the hotel chain and what better way to celebrate! It's not every day people see a 16ft tall giant duck in the middle of the Grassmarket, so naturally we’re sure people will grab their phones to take a selfie!

Apex City of London celebrates 10 years with stunning new extension
This November, Apex City of London celebrated 10 years of providing guests with amazing stays in the heart of London. To mark the special occasion, the hotel recently underwent an extensive extension, by adding 30 striking rooms through the conversion of a neighbouring Grade II listed office building. The new extension has increased the Apex City of London bedroom count to a total of 209, making it the largest hotel in the Apex Hotels portfolio.
An Edinburgh partnership set to pamper: Apex Hotels to partner with Pure Spa & Beauty
Apex Hotels and successful spa operator Pure Spa are partnering to offer spa and beauty treatments at its Apex Waterloo Place Hotel. Hitting the height of city sophistication with the new Apex City of Glasgow
Glasgow’s newest hotel, the Apex City of Glasgow, officially opened its doors on Wednesday 14 October 2015. Following on from an extensive fit out, the stunning new four star hotel on Bath Street was Apex Hotel’s first foray into the Glasgow market. Situated in the heart of Glasgow, the new hotel has 104 modern bedrooms including five duplex suites with striking views over the city. It is Apex Hotels’ ninth property, joining its portfolio spanning Edinburgh, Dundee and London.
