Steps from Waterloo Place
Calton Hill & Dugald Stewart Monument, turn left.
A leisurely stroll up to the photographer hotspot, Calton Hill, is just minutes from Waterloo Place. Here you’ll find the striking Dugald Stewart Monument, Edinburgh’s Disgrace, an observatory, and panoramic views stretching from Edinburgh Castle to the Firth of Forth, a perfect spot for summer photos.
Scott Monument & Princes Street Gardens, turn right.
Directly below the hill, Princes Street Gardens offers a lush escape in summer. Dominating its eastern end is the Gothic Scott Monument, with internal viewing platforms reached by spiral stairs, ideal for city-lovers wanting a different view. If you have the thigh power for the 287 steps, climb up!
The Royal Mile, turn right and across the bridge.
The centre of all things Fringe can be found in the capital’s high street. Tucked in between the Castle, St Gile’s Cathedral and an epic mile of history are performers and promoters. So, if you don’t have plans, stroll up to the festival’s hub, and pick up a programme or a flyer!
Spa & Dining at Apex, find yourself here
Back at the hotel, treat yourself with a dip in our basement pool, followed by dinner at Liberté Brasserie and then end the night with cocktails in Bar 1819, the perfect way to unwind after sightseeing.
Around Apex Grassmarket Hotel
Grassmarket Square & Edinburgh Castle
This atmospheric cobbled square is framed by pubs and restaurants, with our neighbour Edinburgh Castle towering above, an unbeatable summer selfie backdrop. The Grassmarket is also the place to be for vintage shopping.
Greyfriars Kirkyard & Bobby’s Statue, turn right
Just off the Grassmarket lies Greyfriars Kirkyard, a fascinating historic graveyard (with familiar wizarding world connections, and plenty of ghost stories!) and don’t miss the heartwarming statue of Greyfriars Bobby, the loyal dog. Though people touch his nose “for luck” we encourage guests to refrain from doing so. (As Bobby has had multiple nose jobs in recent years!)
Camera Obscura & Wizarding Magic, up Victoria Street
A short walk as you walk towards the castle, brings you to Camera Obscura for a world of interactive illusions, and panoramic rooftop views. Beyond there, magic can be found on Victoria Street, the inspiration for Diagon Alley, colour and culture awaits you!
Summer & Edinburgh Fringe Highlights
August comes alive with Edinburgh Festival Fringe, transforms the Royal Mile and every nook and cranny Edinburgh can provide. Wander, pick up flyers, and soak up the buzz. Summer Sessions & Outdoor performances are a-plenty as part of the Free Fringe. Princes Street Gardens and nearby venues feature concerts, theatre, and dance throughout July and August.
Festive al fresco bars appear throughout town during summer and Fringe, ideal for post-show drinks or sunset toasts on the city’s cobbled streets.
Edinburgh Summer Tips
Go uphill early. Tackle Calton Hill or Arthur’s Seat first. Less crowds, sunrise views, stronger breeze. Also, if you see an endless staircase, there is likely an alternative route up nearby.
Leave gaps in your Fringe schedule, a spontaneous flyer could lead to your most memorable experience. Also, leave plenty of time to get from A to B. Edinburgh is it’s busiest, so even walking can take a little longer than usual!
To beat the heat (if Scottish weather is feeling generous) take midday breaks in Princes Street Gardens for an ice-cream or in our spa, a little bit of calm in the city.
Edinburgh’s elegant architecture, centuries-old landmarks, and vibrant summer festivities make it an unforgettable getaway. The true magic lies in the little discoveries a street performer along Princes Street, a great find vintage shopping, or the incredible coffee you’ll get from an old police box. It’s well worth a visit, or a return trip.
Stay with us at Apex Waterloo Place or at an Apex in the Grassmarket and enjoy everything from heritage sites to Fringe surprises before returning to Apex excellence.
